The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) and the National Research Foundation (NRF), in partnership with the national Global Change Science Committee (GCSC) and the University of Mpumalanga (UMP), will host a four-day 6th National Global Change Conference, under the theme: Transformational Science for Social and Economic Empowerment in a Changing World. The conference will take place at the UMP campus in Mbombela from 01 – 04 December 2025.
Theme: Transformational Science for Social and Economic Empowerment in a Changing World
01–04 December 2025
“Global change” is a mature term, which has evolved as we learn more about the complex interactions within and among natural and human social and economic systems. Global change has taken on new meaning in 2025 as the world lurches into a new geopolitical era with decades-long post-World War II norms and assumptions upended. This revolution reminds us that all systems, both natural and human, are always in flux and that a steady state is a product of a set of drivers which themselves are subject to variation and flux. It also forces us to confront assumptions that we make even unwittingly. In fact, this year, the very fundaments of science, the believability of data and facts, are being challenged in ways that generations of researchers have ever had to confront. In this context, as global change researchers, must be able to show that the work we do it both relevant and impactful, in order to mount a robust defensive of our craft. More than ever before, we need to produce the data and evidence from our respective disciplines, and in addition we need to cooperate and learn to work better with researchers, practitioners, organizations and communities beyond our traditional set of collaborators.
Conference Theme and Objectives
Provide a platform for sharing and discussing South African research, technology, and innovation trends in the global change realm, addressing environmental challenges of our time.
Facilitate networking among global change stakeholders and communities to create and strengthen partnerships that will enhance research and catalyze innovation.
Empower and mentor the next generation of young researchers and innovators addressing societal challenges.
DAY 1: MONDAY, 01 DECEMBER 2025.
Pivoting/Positioning STI for socio-economic development (entrepreneurship, transformation and empowerment)
DAY 2: TUESDAY, 02 DECEMBER 2025.
Building resilient communities in the face of increasing natural disasters
DAY 3: WEDNESDAY, 03 DECEMBER 2025.
Technology and infrastructures as enablers for research
DAY 4: THURSDAY, 04 DECEMBER 2025.

This serves as the first call for abstracts for oral and poster presentations to be made at the conference. Guidelines for submitting an abstract are attached herewith for individuals who would like their scientific work to be considered for presentation at the conference. While the call is broad, preference will be given to registered post-graduate students and emerging researchers.
The Global Change Research Plan (GCRP) remains the framework that guides funding and investment decisions in global change research in South Africa. Its four pillars — also known as knowledge challenges — will be used to ensure that accepted abstracts cover the entire scope of the plan. Global Change Grand Challenge National Research Plan.
For oral and poster presentations, individuals are requested to submit a presentation title accompanied by a short abstract (less than 300 words) for pre-selection. Accepted abstracts from this phase will proceed to the second and final selection stage. In this final stage, presenters are expected to submit extended abstracts (up to 5 pages). Extended abstracts will be peer-reviewed and published in the conference Book of Abstracts. Abstracts may be submitted via email to globalchange2025@ump.ac.za.
July 2025: Submission of abstracts (< 300 words).
August 2025: Submission of completed forms for EoIs (side events or exhibitions).
August 2025: Feedback or notification of acceptance of abstracts.
Sept 2025: Feedback on EoIs (side events and exhibitions).
Sept 2025: Submission of final abstracts (< 3 A4 pages)
Nov 2025: Conference registration closing date
There is no registration fee per person/delegate to attend the conference. Online registration is mandatory for all attendees (delegates, presenters, side event hosts, exhibition teams).
Registration Closed !!.
Expression of Interest (EoI) for Side Event and Exhibition
The organisers will welcome any Expression of Interests (EoI) to host a side event or exhibit research work, products, and services relevant to global change.
